Users complain about the iPhone’s rapidly aging batteries

Although battery ageing is a phenomenon that has always existed, it was unknown to the vast majority of users up to a certain point. Its causes and consequences were widely reported about two years ago, when Apple introduced a mechanism in the iOS that limits the iPhone’s performance when the battery reaches 80% of its capacity. Cupertino explained this with the intention of eliminating accidental restarts, although no other smartphone has ever experienced such an effect, with the exception of the iPhone. That’s why users decided that Apple would just install completely useless batteries in their devices.

iPhone X owners have complained about the rapid degradation of their smartphone batteries. Related messages appear on the Reddit portal and Apple’s official technical support forum. Many have seen their battery capacity increase from 100% to 80-85% in two years of reduced use. This is precisely when special mechanisms begin to limit processor performance to prevent spontaneous restarts due to power surges.

When should I change the battery?

Overall, this result was quite expected, given that the lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 500 charge cycles before degrading. It turns out that if you charge your smartphone every day, the battery will reach a point where it will need to be replaced so that the iPhone doesn’t lose power in about a year and a half. Of course, users who complained about the drop in capacity knew this, but they were still hoping that their smartphone would last a little longer without repair.

The main claim of iPhone X owners is that by buying a smartphone for a thousand euros, they expected a longer period of uninterrupted operation. Nevertheless, they feel that Apple should have paid more attention to preserving the battery of a smartphone that is so expensive in terms of capacity. For example, by increasing its ability to keep the power of the iPhone X at the same retail price as previous generation smartphones, 1.5 times more.

Why has the iPhone’s performance dropped

On the one hand, of course, no one promised these people that the iPhone X would work properly longer than other smartphones. But, on the other hand, no one warned them that the device will not last as long before the next iPhone is released, and that they will either have to forget past performance or take the old flagship to the service center. Of course, for some time now Apple has been talking about it on its website, but hides this information where ordinary users don’t usually go, and uses such specific formulations that, in a hurry to understand it, not everyone can. However, if you are concerned and the battery capacity has really decreased, we recommend that you contact the Apple Service Center. Often the main problem is not the battery, so in this case you need to be diagnosed by specialists.

Is there anything you can do? Well, not really. This year, however, Apple has done just that by equipping the iPhone 11 with a dynamic power management system that slows down the aging of the battery and prevents tangible performance drops, even when the battery is worn out. It is known that the new mechanism is a combination of hardware components and software algorithms, but it is not clear why it could not be integrated into previous models, especially since the problem of wear has existed for several years.
